A non-nitrogenous bisphosphonate that inhibits hydroxyapatite crystal growth (IC50 = 1.34 µM) and bone resorption; is cytotoxic to both osteoclasts and macrophages and has been used in biological research to selectively induce apoptosis of macrophage-like cells and cancer cells
