A first generation sulfonylurea; increases glycolysis and inhibits glucagon-induced gluconeogenesis in isolated rat hepatocytes at 0.2 mM; reverses increases in blood glucose levels induced by hydrochlorothiazide and previous insulin in a rabbit model of diabetes at 250 mg/kg once or 10 mg/kg per day for six days
