An oxysterol and a precursor in the biosynthesis of CA and CDCA; formed via the oxidation of cholesterol by CYP7A1 in rat liver microsomes; increases ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin levels in HUVECs at 40 µM; increases secretion of CCL2 and MMP-9 in serum-deprived THP-1 cells at 5 µg/ml; has been found in macrophages isolated from atherosclerotic lesions in rabbits fed a high-cholesterol diet
