Description
An essential amino acid; serves as a substrate for TPH, IDO, and TDO for the biosynthesis of 5-HT and kynurenine; metabolized by enteric bacteria expressing tryptophanase into indole, pyruvate, and ammonia; increases 5-HT, 5-HTP, and 5-HIAA levels in the diencephalon of rats at 300 mg/kg; decreases the time rats spent immobile in the forced swim test, indicating antidepressant-like activity, at 4 and 20 mg/kg per day for eight weeks
