A metabolite of 5-ASA and sulfasalazine; reduces IFN-γ binding to colonic epithelial cells by 24% at 10 mM; scavenges DPPH radicals in a cell-free assay; inhibits hydroxy radical-stimulated DNA base hydroxylation; urinary levels have been used as a marker of 5-ASA adherence in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
